Adult Basic Education
This course is designed to help students improve basic skills in reading, math and writing. Instruction is individualized. Peer tutoring , audiovisual, cooperative learning methods and technology are used to give students a motivating experience.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)
This course is designed to help students understand, speak, read, and write the English language. Class instruction emphasizes the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills needed for everyday survival situations. English as a Second Language instruction is provided to students at the level most appropriate for them. Six levels of ESL instruction are presently being offered.
GED Test Preparation for High School Equivalency Diploma
This course is for adults interested in preparing for the GED exam administered by the state of New York. Students must be able to function in reading, math and writing at the high school level. Computer assisted instruction, peer tutoring and independent study projects are used to help students prepare to take the General Education Development Test (GED).
Fast Track HSE Preparation Courses
These courses are designed to assist traditional HSE students who were unsuccessful in passing the General Education Development Test (GED) administered by the state of New York. Participants will be given six hours per week of intense preparation in math and one other subject needed to pass the official NYS GED test. Successful students will obtain their HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma.
Fast Track students will also participate in a (3) hour Test Taking Strategies course designed to help them improve their study habits and test taking skills, and a (3) hour Computer Skills course designed to prepare them to take computer-based tests (TABE, GED and Accuplacer).
U.S. Citizenship Test Preparation
This course is taught in English only. It is designed to prepare students for the U.S. Citizenship Test. Course material covers U.S. history and government, the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and state and local government. Practice questions and answers will be offered to familiarize students with test-taking procedures.
Defensive Driving Course (Offered in the Spring)
This course offers you the benefits of receiving a mandatory 10% insurance discount for 3 years and up to a four point reduction total! It is approved by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You can take this course every 3 years to keep your discounted insurance rate.
