• The New York State Education Department (NYSED) is engaging teachers, administrators, and education experts across the State and nation in the creation of curriculum resources, instructional materials, professional development materials,samples of test questions, test specifications, and other test-related materials that will help with the transition to the New York State P-12 Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS).

    CCLS, both PreK-8 instruction and assessments will change. In academic year 2012-13, all ELA and mathematicsinstruction must be aligned to the Common Core, except for grades 9-12 instruction, which will phase in according to theCommon Core implementation timeline. The grades 3-8 tests will be aligned to the CCLS starting in spring 2013.

    In order to assist schools and districts with the implementation of the Common Core, NYSED has provided curriculum modules and units in P-12 ELA and math that can be adopted or adapted for local purposes. All remaining modules and units necessary for the first semester of the 2013-14 school year will be posted by the summer. Modules and units necessary for the second semester will be posted by early winter.

    Common Core Implementation Timeline 

    The Common Core Implementation Timeline provides a “scope and sequence” of activities for Common Core State Standards (CCSS) implementation from Summer 2011 to the school year 2014-15. It includes implementation activities related to exemplary modules, RFP timelines, the launch of State Standards in other content areas, transitional test development and the PARCC assessments.

    The Common Core Implementation Timeline was updated on April 22, 2013 to include implementation changes to the Regents Exams, NYSESLAT, NYSAA, and the State's curriculum modules.
