NYS District Monitor
Oversight, Transparency, and Support for Student Success
In accordance with New York State Education Law, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has appointed a State Monitor to the Hempstead Union Free School District. The role of the Monitor is to provide oversight, guidance, and support to the district in key areas of governance, fiscal management, and academic improvement.
This partnership ensures transparency, accountability, and continuous progress in providing equitable, high-quality educational opportunities for all Hempstead scholars.
About the State Monitor’s Role
The responsibilities of the NYSED-appointed Monitor include:

Reviewing and guiding the development of the district’s annual budget and financial plans

Monitoring the implementation of the district’s academic improvement strategies

Evaluating district governance, board operations, and administrative practices

Providing technical assistance and recommendations to the Board of Education and Superintendent

Engaging with the community to foster trust, communication, and shared goals

Reporting progress to the New York State Commissioner of Education
Monitor Reports and Public Documents
The State Monitor regularly submits reports to the New York State Education Department, which may include recommendations, updates on district progress, and feedback on budgetary and academic matters.
Archived and prior-year reports may be requested through the district clerk’s office.
Community Engagement and Public Input
The State Monitor is committed to open communication with the Hempstead community. As part of this commitment, the Monitor may attend Board of Education meetings and community forums. Families, students, and residents are encouraged to share their thoughts and remain actively engaged in the district’s progress.
