Groundbreaking Marks a New Chapter for ABGS Middle School

A momentous occasion took place on the campus of Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School this October 11, 2025, as district leaders, community members, and scholars joined together to celebrate the start of a new era for Hempstead’s middle school community.

With shovels in hand, representatives from the Hempstead Union Free School District, local government, and the greater community broke ground on what will become a state-of-the-art middle school building and athletic facilities, anticipated for completion during the 2027–2028 school year. The event marked the first major campus reconstruction since the school’s original opening more than five decades ago.

Standing alongside district officials were proud Hempstead scholars, teachers, and alumni — each symbolizing the strength and spirit of the Hempstead community. The ceremony honored not only the promise of new facilities, but also the enduring commitment to providing safe, modern, and inspiring learning environments for all scholars.

The new A.B.G.S. Middle School will replace outdated structures and long-standing temporary classrooms with an innovative, modern design that reflects 21st-century learning priorities. Plans include dedicated spaces for academic collaboration, performing arts, athletics, and community engagement — all supporting Hempstead’s vision of educational excellence.

As the construction site transforms over the next few years, the district celebrates this milestone as a testament to what is possible when collaboration, vision, and community pride come together. The future of A.B.G.S. Middle School is bright — and this groundbreaking marks only the beginning.
