AMISTAD Attorneys and Judge Visit ABGS Middle School for Constitution Day

ABGS Middle School welcomed a distinguished group of legal professionals on September 17, 2026, in recognition of Constitution Day. Representatives from AMISTAD, The Long Island Black Bar Association, visited classrooms to engage students in meaningful discussions about the United States Constitution, civil rights, and the importance of civic participation.

During the presentations, students learned about the significance of Constitution Day, which commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787, and recognizes all individuals who have become American citizens. Discussions explored important historical topics, including the use of literacy tests to deny voting rights to people of color and the sacrifices made by civil rights advocates, such as the Freedom Riders, in the fight to end segregation and discrimination.

Among the guest speakers was District Court Judge Maxine S. Broderick, the first woman of color to serve as President of the Nassau County Bar Association. Additional presenters included Kevin H. Satterfield, Esq., Director for Compliance for the New York City Department of Correction, and Eckor Joseph, Esq., of the Babylon Town Attorney's Office and Special Prosecutor for the Village of Hempstead. Their insights provided students with valuable perspectives on the legal profession, public service, and the ongoing importance of constitutional rights and responsibilities.

The district extends its gratitude to Ms. Eisner, Data/Individuals & Societies Instructional Coach for the ABGS Middle School IB MYP World School, and Joy S. Bunch, Esq. of AMISTAD for coordinating this educational opportunity on behalf of the Middle School Law Club. Appreciation is also extended to Mrs. Sumner McShane, U.S. History and Government Teacher/Individuals & Societies Instructional Coach, and Mr. Marinelli for hosting the guest speakers in their classrooms.

ABGS Middle School is grateful to the members of AMISTAD for sharing their time, expertise, and experiences with our students. Programs such as these help inspire the next generation of informed citizens, leaders, and changemakers.
