Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)

Creating Safe and Inclusive Schools for Every Scholar

The Hempstead Union Free School District is committed to fostering a learning environment where every student feels safe, supported, and respected. In accordance with the New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), the district prohibits all forms of harassment, bullying, intimidation, and discrimination in our schools.

DASA ensures that no student is subjected to harassment or discrimination based on their actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender, or sex.

Our Goals Under DASA

  • Promote a climate of mutual respect and dignity

  • Prevent and respond to incidents of bullying and discrimination

  • Provide training for staff to identify and address incidents

  • Empower students to speak up and seek support

  • Partner with families to maintain a culture of equity and inclusion

What Is Covered Under DASA?

DASA protects students from:

  • Harassment: The creation of a hostile environment through verbal threats, intimidation, or abuse

  • Bullying: Repeated threats or acts intended to cause fear or harm

  • Cyberbullying: Use of technology to harass or intimidate

  • Discrimination: Unequal treatment based on protected characteristics

These protections apply on school property, in school buildings, on school buses, and at school-sponsored events—both in-person and virtual.

If you or someone you know has experienced bullying, harassment, or discrimination, we encourage you to report it promptly. Reports can be made confidentially to a school administrator or DASA Coordinator.
