Our Commitment to a Safe and Respectful School Environment

The Hempstead Union Free School District is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where teaching and learning can thrive. Our Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for all students, staff, parents, and visitors, and reflects our shared responsibility in supporting a positive school climate across all settings—classrooms, school events, buses, and virtual spaces.

Purpose of the Code

The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to:

  • Promote responsible and respectful behavior
  • Protect the rights and safety of all members of the school community
  • Maintain order necessary for effective teaching and learning
  • Define clear expectations and consequences for behavior
  • Guide the use of progressive discipline and restorative practices
  • Ensure compliance with New York State Education Law and federal regulations

 

What the Code Covers

The full Code of Conduct includes detailed policies and procedures on the following:

  • Student Rights and Responsibilities

  • Expectations for Parents, Teachers, and School Leaders

  • Student Dress Code

  • Prohibited Conduct (e.g., violence, harassment, bullying, drug use, academic misconduct)

  • Disciplinary Actions and Due Process

  • Alternative Instruction During Suspension

  • Discipline of Students with Disabilities

  • Reporting Violations

  • Searches, Interrogations, and Use of Metal Detectors

  • Public Conduct on School Property

Important Reminders

  • It is reviewed and updated annually in collaboration with students, families, staff, and administrators.
