About Our District

Mission Statement

The mission of the Hempstead School District, a Long Island Model suburban-urban culturally diverse public school system is to ensure that students achieve personal growth and academic success and become productive citizens in a global society, by engaging students, staff, family and community in a comprehensive, challenging curriculum and effective instructional program which responds to each student's needs and aspirations in a safe and nurturing environment.

District Goals

Student Achievement

  • We believe that all students can learn and we will strive to ensure that all students will have access to the best resources, and that they are made available in a fair and equitable manner.

    • Strategic Goal: Reduce the number of students who perform at Levels I and II.

Facilities

  • We will build and maintain facilities which are safe, attractive, clean, and conducive to learning.
    • Strategic Goal: Increase the amount of useable real estate in order to reduce overcrowding in our schools.

Transportation

  • Within the parameters of the law, we will ensure that all of our students are provided with the resources for them to safely travel from their places of residence to school and back.
    • Strategic Goal: Improve the quality of pupil transportation service.

Finances

  • We endeavor to provide the best education programs to our students in the most fiscally responsible manner. We will demonstrate to the residents of our school district that we are effective and responsible stewards of their resources.
    • Strategic Goal: Align the school district’s budget to the other strategic goals.

Human Resources

  • We will develop and implement the most effective policies for selecting, developing and retaining our employees
    • Strategic Goals: Develop a Human Resources Manual;
    • Implement an effective system for tracking employee attendance.

Public Relations

  • We will celebrate and publicize out successes; remediate our deficiencies and errors, as part of our effort to attract people to our community, and boost the morale of our stakeholders.

    • Strategic Goal: Revamp school district's website

Governance

  • The Board of Education will endeavor to validate the trust which the residents have placed in them, and they will in turn employ a superintendent, who as the chief executive officer will effectively lead and manage the affairs of the school district, in consultation with the Board of Education.

    • Strategic Goal: Create the following Board of Education Committees - Policy; Curriculum; Facilities; Budget.
