Superintendent's Message: October 2026

Hello Hempstead Family,

As we enter October, I am pleased to reflect on the strong and exciting start we have made to the 2026–2027 school year. Throughout the district there is an energy that matches our theme of One Team, One Mission, Unlimited Opportunities for Our Scholars. The enthusiasm reflected by staff and students is evident as we are off to a great start.

The month of September provided an important foundation for the learning that will take place throughout the year. Our students engaged in a variety of beginning-of-the-year diagnostic and pre-assessments, providing our teachers with valuable information about students’ individual strengths and areas for continued growth. This information will help guide instruction, allowing our educators to better meet the needs of each learner while creating classroom experiences that promote critical thinking, inquiry, problem-solving, and deeper learning. As we move forward, we will continue using student data thoughtfully to inform instruction and ensure that all students are appropriately supported and challenged.

We have also launched our after-school programs, including our 21st Century and Empire programs. These programs extend learning beyond the traditional school day by providing students with additional academic support, enrichment opportunities, and engaging experiences that contribute to their overall development.

We are especially proud to launch our New Refugee Program at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School and Hempstead High School. This program represents our commitment to welcoming and supporting every student and family who becomes part of the Hempstead community. Our diversity remains one of our greatest strengths, and we are committed to ensuring that all students have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to be successful.

As we look ahead, October will be filled with opportunities to celebrate the spirit, culture, and pride of our District. We are excited for our upcoming Homecoming festivities, that brings together our students, families, staff, alumni, and all the community. Homecoming is more than an athletic event it is an opportunity to showcase our students, celebrate school spirit, and recognize the tremendous pride that connects generations of the Hempstead families.

Throughout the District, we will also continue our Hispanic Heritage celebrations, recognizing the rich histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. These celebrations are particularly meaningful within our diverse Hempstead community and provide opportunities for our students to celebrate their heritage while developing a greater appreciation for the cultures and experiences of others. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We will raise awareness and stand in support of individuals and families whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer.

Community engagement continues to be an important part of our work. I am pleased to invite our families, residents, and community stakeholders to our October Community Meeting on Thursday, October 29, 2026, in the Band Box at the Superintendent’s Office. Our community meetings provide an important opportunity to share information, hear directly from our families and residents, and strengthen the partnership between our schools and the community we serve. I encourage you to join us and be part of these important conversations about our District.

As we continue through the fall, I want to thank our students, families, teachers, administrators, support staff, Board of Education, and community partners for your continued dedication to Hempstead. The progress we make as a District is possible because of our collective commitment to our children and our belief in their unlimited potential.

There is much to celebrate, and there is even more ahead. Together, we will continue moving Hempstead forward with One Mission, One Vision, and Unlimited Possibilities for Students.
