Section 504 Accommodations
Hempstead Public Schools is committed to ensuring equal access and opportunity for all employees and applicants in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance.
What Is Section 504?
Section 504 protects individuals with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Under this law, qualified employees and applicants with disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to employment opportunities and workplace participation.
Reasonable Accommodations
Reasonable accommodations under Section 504 may include adjustments to the work environment, job duties, schedules, or equipment that enable an individual to perform the essential functions of their position. Accommodations are determined through an interactive process and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Requesting a Section 504 Accommodation
Employees or applicants seeking a Section 504 accommodation should contact the Human Resources Department to initiate the request process. Supporting documentation may be required, and all information shared will be handled confidentially in accordance with applicable laws and district policies.
Non-Discrimination and Non-Retaliation
Hempstead Public Schools strictly prohibits discrimination or retaliation against any individual who requests an accommodation or participates in a Section 504-related process.
