Dignity for All Students (DASA)

Hempstead Public Schools is committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning and working environment for all members of the school community. In accordance with New York State’s Dignity for All Students Act (The Dignity Act), the District upholds the right of every student to learn in an environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property, on a school bus, and/or at a school function.

Overview of the Dignity Act

The Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law on September 13, 2010, and took effect on July 1, 2012. This legislation amended New York State Education Law by creating Article 2 – Dignity for All Students, reinforcing the State’s commitment to student safety, equity, and respect.

Protections Under the Law

The Dignity Act expands protections to promote tolerance, respect for others, and dignity for all individuals. It includes awareness and sensitivity in relationships among people, including but not limited to differences in race, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, mental or physical ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex.

Instruction and Code of Conduct

The legislation amended Section 801-a of New York State Education Law by expanding instruction in civility, citizenship, and character education to reflect these principles. It also amended Section 2801, requiring Boards of Education to include DASA-related language within their Codes of Conduct.

Reporting and Accountability

Under the Dignity Act, schools are responsible for collecting and reporting data related to material incidents of discrimination, harassment, and bullying. Hempstead Public Schools takes this responsibility seriously and follows all state reporting requirements to ensure transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Commitment to a Respectful School Community

Hempstead Public Schools works collaboratively with students, families, staff, and administrators to foster a school climate rooted in dignity, respect, and inclusion. Reports of DASA-related incidents are reviewed promptly and addressed in accordance with district policies and state law.
