Become a Coach or Section VIII Official

Whether you're a certified teacher or a community member, here’s what you need to know about becoming a coach with us. Requirements vary by certification status.

NYSED Certified Physical Education Teachers

Other NYSED Certified Teachers

Required Certifications:

Child Abuse Training (2 hours) – Required starting April 1, 2025
CPR / First Aid / AED Certification (see resources below)
Online Concussion Training – must be completed every two years

Coursework Requirements:

Within 2 years of appointment:
Philosophy, Principles, and Organization of Athletics in Education
Within 5 years of appointment:
- Health Sciences Applied to Coaching
- Theory and Techniques of Coaching (sport-specific)

Coaching Certification Options:

You may complete either Pathway 1 or Pathway 2:

Non-Teachers/Community Coaches

Step 1:

Apply for a Temporary Coaching License via the NYSED TEACH system

Required Certifications & Documents:

Fingerprinting (see below)
CPR / First Aid / AED Certification
Online Concussion Training – must be completed every two years
Child Abuse Prevention & Violence Prevention Workshops
DASA Training (Dignity for All Students Act)
