Hempstead Public Schools General Music Program

The Hempstead Public Schools General Music Program introduces students to the joys and fundamentals of music starting in Pre-Kindergarten and continuing through 8th grade. For secondary students who do not participate in performance ensembles such as band, orchestra, or chorus, Music in Our Lives provides an engaging and enriched musical experience that promotes creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

Program Highlights by Grade Level:

  • Primary Students (Pre-K–2): Explore instruments from around the world while learning the basics of rhythm and melody.

  • Grade 3: Build foundational skills through learning recorders and continued musical exploration.

  • Grade 4: Deepen musical understanding with opportunities to perform on a wider variety of instruments.

  • Grades 5–6: Engage in research and reflection on artists, musical styles, and instruments while strengthening knowledge of music theory and history.

  • Grades 7–8: Continue Music in Our Lives with more in-depth exploration of cultural and historical contexts, advanced listening skills, and expanded performance opportunities.

Through this program, students develop critical listening skills, gain knowledge of diverse musical traditions, and build a strong foundation that often inspires participation in major ensembles, theatrical productions, and small group performances.
