Hempstead’s Homecoming isn’t just about a high school football game—it’s a beloved tradition that unites generations, neighborhoods, and schools. Each year, the Village bursts into color and energy: a morning spirited parade, a show of talent from students of all ages, spirited school contests, and a football game with a halftime performance that rounds out the day. From elementary school floats to the high school’s marching band, everyone takes part. The day highlights students’ skills, school collaboration, and the pride that unites Hempstead’s neighborhoods and generations.

A long history — now reaching its 136th year in 2025

Hempstead’s Homecoming tradition is remarkably enduring. In 2025, the village marked the 136th annual Homecoming Parade, reflecting over a century of continuous community celebration. Each year, that number rises as new generations add their voices, steps, and pride to the legacy.

Over the decades, the Homecoming has grown in scale and significance. What may have begun as a modest parade tied to the high school’s October football rivalry has expanded into a full-day festival — with floats, performances, school group showcases, alumni return, and the culminating game and halftime show.

From Greenwich Street to President Street 

Historically the high school stood on Greenwich Street (the building remembered by many alumni), and that site later became the middle school after the high school moved. Local alumni memories and school histories recall the Greenwich Street building as the old high school site; the Homecoming tradition continued as the district and campus locations evolved. Today the Homecoming parade, pep events, and the game center around the current Hempstead High School campus on President Street, with students from every school — elementary, middle and high — taking part in floats, performing groups, marching bands, and cheer squads.
