Hempstead
High School students had the
opportunity to enter the National
Society, Daughters of the American
Revolution, Junior American Citizens
Creative Writing and Expression
competition. The theme of the contest
was America: Land of Opportunity. The
Ruth Floyd Woodhull Chapter in Freeport,
NY sponsored the High School students.
Students were given a choice to write a
poem or a short story.
The H.H.S.
students gained notable recognition in
the New York State and Northeast
Regional divisions of the contest. At
the State level, Chante Hutchinson won
first place for her poetry entry, and
Jocelyn Solis-Moreira placed first for
her short story. Wendy Bonilla placed
third for the entry of her poem.
Jacqueline Fleuriscar, Shane McKay,
Elana Muniz, Terry Pharr, Caitlyn
Sanchez and Jocelyn Solis-Moreira all
received Honorable Mention in the NYS
judging of their poems.
The level of
competition heightened at the northeast
Regional Division, which included the
states of Maine, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and
New Hampshire. Chante Hutchinson and
Jocelyn Solis-Moreira won first place at
this level of competition. Their entries
were submitted to the national
competition where both students received
an honorable mention. Hats off to these
students. Keep up the excellent work.
