Hempstead High School students had the opportunity to enter the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Junior American Citizens Creative Writing and Expression competition. The theme of the contest was America: Land of Opportunity. The Ruth Floyd Woodhull Chapter in Freeport, NY sponsored the High School students. Students were given a choice to write a poem or a short story.

The H.H.S. students gained notable recognition in the New York State and Northeast Regional divisions of the contest. At the State level, Chante Hutchinson won first place for her poetry entry, and Jocelyn Solis-Moreira placed first for her short story. Wendy Bonilla placed third for the entry of her poem. Jacqueline Fleuriscar, Shane McKay, Elana Muniz, Terry Pharr, Caitlyn Sanchez and Jocelyn Solis-Moreira all received Honorable Mention in the NYS judging of their poems.

The level of competition heightened at the northeast Regional Division, which included the states of Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Chante Hutchinson and Jocelyn Solis-Moreira won first place at this level of competition. Their entries were submitted to the national competition where both students received an honorable mention. Hats off to these students. Keep up the excellent work.
