High Schoolers Host an Afternoon of Fun for Kids

Campus teens help to bring smiles to youngsters' faces during Children's Day Celebration

As participants in the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club’s Children’s Day Celebration, Hempstead High School Campus students transformed two Fulton Elementary School classrooms into an activity fun zone for kids in March.

Led by College Preparatory Academy for Music and Art guidance counselor Jessica Sabia, 10 high school students volunteered their time after school that day to host arts and crafts activities, exercises, snack time, and more for the young faces of the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club. While spending time with the children, the high schoolers were also able to teach them about the importance of, among other things, learning, teamwork, listening to others, creativity and respect for diversity.

The event, which gave the high school students the opportunity to inspire the younger generation to be productive citizens, was also a part of the high school’s ongoing efforts to encourage students to do all that they can to give back to the Hempstead community.

Hempstead High School’s football team defeats Valley Stream Central High, 33-14. Go Tigers!

The Hempstead community heard the Tigers roar on October 22 as the Hempstead Public Schools celebrated its 122nd Annual Homecoming and Vending Festival. Hundreds of students, principals, parents, families and residents showed their Hempstead Tiger pride by marching in the district’s annual Homecoming Parade, which kicked off the Year of the Tiger celebration. The Hempstead High School football team later capped off the celebration with a 33-14 victory against Valley Stream Central High School. Go Tigers!

The Hempstead Board of Education and Acting Superintendent of Schools Julius Brown congratulates all of the students and homecoming participants for showing their school-spirit throughout the day and supporting the Hempstead School District. The district also thanks Music and Fine Arts Director Angel Perez and all of the organizers of this year's celebration for making the annual Hempstead Tiger spirit-filled day a success.

Summer Enrichment Hits Barack Obama and Fulton Schools

Hempstead elementary students celebrate the importance of literacy during summer school programs.

Led by coordinators Patricia Horne and Steve Izzo, the district recently hosted two summer school culmination celebrations for students in pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade.

At Barack Obama School, the district hosted a Summer School Read-A-Thon for students and their families. The event featured students reading books with their teachers, parents and family members, as well as to one another as a way to celebrate the importance of literacy.

And the summer learning did not stop there.

The district also hosted a Student Publishing Celebration at Fulton School, where students showcased the writings they completed throughout the program to their families, friends and other special visitors. The event ended with an ice cream party for all of the participants and guests.

Both events, district officials stated, also celebrated the students’ summer journey towards academic excellence.

Fulton School Wears Pink to Help Find a Cure

Students and faculty raise awareness about Breast Cancer research during Pink for the Cure Day

Members of Hempstead’s Fulton School united on October 15 to lend a helping hand in the fight against Breast Cancer during the school’s Pink for the Cure Day. The event raised money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, a global network of breast cancer survivors and activists that works to find a cure for the disease, according to its website.

By wearing pink clothing, collecting donations and distributing informational literature, administrators said, the students and staff were able to raise awareness in the Hempstead school community about a worthy cause.
