District Celebrates Read Across America Day
In celebration of National Read Across America Day, the Early Childhood Center (ECC), and Hempstead Pre-K School recently hosted different activities for students to promote the importance of literacy. The event, which is a reading initiative created by the National Education Association, is held on March 2 annually in observance of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
At ECC, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia, Board of Education Trustee Gladys Rivera, and other special guests created Dr. Seuss hats with kindergarten students. Teachers at the school also read Dr. Suess stories to the students, who came dressed for the occasion in their pajamas.
And the learning and fun did not stop there.
Students at Hempstead Pre-K School were also able to participate in storytime sessions with district administrators and directors as well as local elected officials including Nassau County Legislator Kevan Abrahams and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray. The special guests visited Pre-K classrooms throughout the day to read “The Cat in the Hat,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” “The Foot Book” and other Dr. Suess classics to the children.

ECC Gives Parents a School Year Preview
Hempstead Kindergarten Center hosts annual Meet the Teacher Night.
Parents of students in the Hempstead School District’s Early Childhood Center learned
about curriculum and plans for the 2010-2011 academic year during the school’s annual Meet the Teacher Night on September 23.
With help from their children and administrators in the school, parents also had the opportunity to tour the school building. Principal Richard Brown said the event is a success each year because it helps parents build a working relationship with teachers and keeps them informed about the important assignments, tests and activities that are scheduled for the school year.
