Students Celebrate the Ideals of MLK

Hempstead academic achievers recite excerpts of speeches to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In honor of the life, work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama and Jackson Main Elementary Schools in the Hempstead School District hosted oratorical contests in January.

The Barack Obama School hosted a Power of Love Assembly on January 26, which featured musical performances, MLK trivia questions and greetings from Hempstead Board of Education Vice President JoAnn Simmons, Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall, and Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby.

During the contest, 15 students recited excerpts from King’s speech “Loving Your Enemies,” which emphasizes the importance of compassion, forgiveness and respect for others. These talented Hempstead first through fifth graders also competed in the contest as three oratorical teams. After the judges selected a first, second and third place winner from each grade, the school’s Principal Helisse Palmore and Dr. Martin Luther King Committee Chairwoman LaTisha Elliott presented the students with trophies for their wonderful recitation. Palmore and Elliott also awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal to the three teams for their overall group performance.

At the Jackson Main School contest on January 27, students recited excerpts from King’s “What Is Your Life’s Blueprint,” “I Have a Dream” and Noble Peace Prize award acceptance speeches. Jackson Main School Principal Dr. Rodney Gilmore then presented the participants with a first, second or third-place trophy for their outstanding recitation. The program, which also featured musical selections and poem readings, concluded with the students singing R&B artist Stevie Wonder’s version of “Happy Birthday” in celebration of King’s birthday.

The Hempstead Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia congratulate both schools for hosting such informative and successful MLK celebrations.
