Middle School Hosts Fine Arts Exhibition
ABGS Middle School Hosts Character Education Awards
ABGS Students Win African-American Challenge...Again
Students from the ABGS Middle School recently won the 100 Black Men of Long Island 's 16th Annual African-American Academic History Challenge. It was the second consecutive year that the school has been victorious in the contest. Seventh-grader Jason Adam Williams and sixth-grader Jose Guerra-Lopez defeated Longwood Middle School in a nail-biter during the championship round of the competition by answering the final question correctly in the “Jeopardy” style contest. The event was held at the Wyandanch Public Library and sponsored by State Farm Insurance.
Jason, who plans to become a detective, and Jose, who aspires to become a computer engineer, will be awarded $500 in scholarships for college expenses. These two talented Hempstead achievers, who are both honor students, also earned an all expenses paid trip to the 100 Black Men of America 's National Education Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in June, where they will compete in the national championship. Additional college scholarships and prizes will be up for grabs in Atlanta. Mr. Khayyam E. Ali, their coach and academic advisor, will serve as their chaperone.
"The 100 Black Men of Long Island, Inc.'s annual African-American Academic History Challenge (History Bowl) enriches the lives of students who participate in the jeopardy style competition and provides future scholarship dollars for winners,” 100 Black Men of America President Phil Andrews stated. “The bowl is part of our mission to provide substantial mentoring activities in the Long Island region across diverse communities."

Students Perform With the Long Island Philharmonic
As part of its ongoing partnership with the Long Island Philharmonic,
the district hosted a Music in Our Schools concert at Hempstead High
School on March 22. The concert, which was led by the orchestra's Music
Director David Stewart Wiley, featured instrumental performances by the
district's elementary, middle school and high school students.

Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society visited Nassau Extended Care Facility in Hempstead on February 10 to create Valentine’s Day cards with the senior citizen residents living there. The caring ABGS Middle School students also presented the seniors with roses in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

Schools Honor First Quarter Academic Achievers
To recognize students who have maintained a high grade
point average during the first quarter of the 2011-2012 school year, the
Hempstead High School Campus hosted a Student Recognition Night on
December 13, and the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School hosted a
Student Recognition Breakfast on December 15.
At the high school, students were honored for earning a place on the
Principal's List, Arista List, Honor Roll or Merit Roll. At the middle
school, students were recognized for being named to the school's Honor
Roll or Arista List.

New Adelphi University Saturday Academy
High school and middle school students in the
district currently have the opportunity to enroll in a Saturday Academy
for math and science at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY. The
university’s Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) will provide
students with remediation and enrichment in math and science, as well as
incorporate content literacy in its instruction. The academy is slated to begin on Saturday,
January 7, 2012.

Please put these dates on your calendar. Students will be dismissed by 11:30 a.m.

Social Studies Classes to Host Tasteful Tuesdays
This ABGS Middle School’s new monthly Tasteful Tuesdays initiative will be held for students during their social studies classes to help them prepare for the workforce. Once a month, the school will encourage students to come to school dressed in interview attire. In their social studies classes, the students will then participate in lessons that are designed to prepare them for a career. The first tasteful Tuesday will be held on November 29, 2011. Tigers Win 2011 Year of the Tiger Homecoming!
Hempstead High School’s football team defeats Valley Stream Central High, 33-14. Go Tigers!
The Hempstead community heard the Tigers roar on October 22 as the
Hempstead Public Schools celebrated its 122nd Annual Homecoming and
Vending Festival. Hundreds of students, principals, parents, families
and residents showed their Hempstead Tiger pride by marching in the
district’s annual Homecoming Parade, which kicked off the Year of the
Tiger celebration. The Hempstead High School football team later capped
off the celebration with a 33-14 victory against Valley Stream Central
High School. Go Tigers!
The Hempstead Board of Education and Acting Superintendent of Schools
Julius Brown congratulates all of the students and homecoming
participants for showing their school-spirit throughout the day and
supporting the Hempstead School District. The district also thanks Music
and Fine Arts Director Angel Perez and all of the organizers of this
year's celebration for making the annual Hempstead Tiger spirit-filled

School bells are ringing again in the Hempstead Public Schools. Students returned to school on September 6 ready to learn and work diligently at becoming outstanding academic achievers in the 2011-2012 school year.
While welcoming students to another academic year, district administrators also visited classrooms throughout the district to discuss plans for continued improvement in academics and building operations this year with students, teachers and staff members.

Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School to Host a Saturday Academy for Students
The ABGS Middle School is pleased to announce that it will offer a Saturday Academy for students for math and English from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The goal of this program is to identify and improve the skills that students struggle with in the classroom. Permission slips will be sent home with the students. Please sign and return them to the ABGS Middle School Main Office.

District Hosts Inaugural Sports Awards Night Dinner
Administration honors students for their 2010-2011 athletic achievements.
To recognize the remarkable 2010-2011 sports achievements of its talented students, the Hempstead Public Schools recently hosted a Sports Awards Night Dinner. The event, which honored Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School and Hempstead High School students, was the first of its kind in the school district’s history.
Throughout the celebration, the Hempstead Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia, District Athletic Director Dr. Robert Cincotta and sports coaches districtwide commended the students for excelling on the field and court as a Hempstead Tiger athlete.
During the award ceremony, ABGS Middle School athletes were honored with Project Neighborhood Peacemaker awards for their leadership and sportsmanship, and Hempstead High School students were awarded scholarships, varsity letters and Hempstead Tiger jackets for their athletic accomplishments.
“The Hempstead Public Schools’ athletic program is an important part of our school district’s efforts to provide our students with a versatile educational experience, and this has been a wonderful year for our student-athletes,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia stated. “Our students have demonstrated their determination, athletic abilities, and sportsmanship throughout the year, which have brought a renewed sense of pride to our school community. Tonight, we gather together to celebrate these achievements as we congratulate our athletes on a job well done.”

Students Celebrate Successful School Year With COTA
Several Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School students were recently treated to a special lunch compliments of the Council Of Thought and Action (COTA). The lunch was held in celebration of a successful year where students met once a week with representatives from the organization to discuss topics including academics, decision making, conflict resolution and many other positive traits and characteristics that help middle school students become successful young men. The district sends a special thank you to Risco Mention-Lewis and her staff for working with the young men of ABGS throughout the school year.

ABGS Middle School Wins 100 Black Men Competition at Newsday
On Saturday, April 30, 2011, Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School students Elijah and Timothy John won the 100 Black Men of Long Island 15th Annual African-American History Challenge Competition by the remarkable score of 15-0. “The John Brothers” defeated Brentwood Middle School in the final round by answering every question correctly in the jeopardy style contest.
The win was the first of its kind in the 100 Black Men of Long Island Inc. competition, and the first championship for the Hempstead School District in the annual contest. The event was held at Newsday’s headquarters in Melville and it was co-sponsored by Newsday and State Farm Insurance Co. The affair was moderated by 100 Black Men President Phil Andrews.
Elijah and Timothy will both be awarded a $500 scholarship for college for winning the competition. They also earned an all expenses paid trip to San Francisco, California in June, where they will compete in the national championships during the 100 Black Men of America's National Education Conference. The trip will be chaperoned by their African-American History coach and academic advisor, Mr. Ali, who is a sixth grade teacher at ABGS.
A total of $5,000 in additional college scholarships will be awarded in San Francisco. “The John Brothers” and Mr. Ali would like to thank, ABGS school principal, Mr. Carlos Perez, for his ongoing support of this endeavor, and for providing the time and facilities for the students to accomplish this extraordinary achievement.


PTSA Honors ABGS Boys Basketball Team
The Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School PTSA hosted a Congratulations Dinner for the school’s boys’ basketball team to recognize the Tigers for remaining undefeated during the 2010-2011 season.
During the celebration, Head Coach Nicholas Wisz, Assistant Coach Steven Hodish, and the players were presented with plaques for their remarkable achievement. In addition, Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall and Trustee Don Ryan presented each player and coach with a citation.

Aviation Professionals Visit ABGS
Members of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) hosted an informational assembly for Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School's eighth graders on March 24. Ray Melcer and his team discussed careers in aviation, responsibilities as a pilot and procedures at a crash site for an FAA inspector. Students also participated in a lengthy question and answer session, which helped them to learn more about the skills and training that is required to work in the aviation field. ABGS Students Learn Life Lessons from Beauty Queen
Middle School teens participate in special assembly featuring Miss Tall International 2010 Joy Dawson as a guest speaker
Teens at Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempstead recently learned about the
importance of having self-confidence, showing kindness to others and excelling in school from Miss Tall International 2010 and motivational speaker Joy Dawson.
Dawson, who spoke to the teens during a two-session morning assembly, encouraged the students to always take a stand against bullying and to work diligently at bringing their dreams to fruition. ABGS Middle School Assistant Principal Henry Williams called the event a success because it gave the school’s administration another opportunity to educate students about safety, tolerance, teamwork and academics.
