The Homework Helper club started during SEPTA (Special Education PTA) October 26, 2009 meeting. Our SEPTA /PTSA volunteer parent Beverly Robinson set everything in motion. We had 1 high school Senior volunteer Shanita Ray and Terrence Uzamere, a 10th grader in our community, available in the room across from the bandbox to assist children of SEPTA parents with homework. (We thank Mr. Williams, for giving us permission and arranging for us to use this convenient room).  A few youngsters went home with their homework completed.  While there were some that went home with assignments that were given out by Ms. Robinson.  Again, there were parents who were very thankful their sons/daughters would not be up late doing homework after attending our SEPTA meeting!

Beverly Robinson also started the ABGS Middle School PTSA Homework Helper and decided that SEPTA would benefit from this as well.  Reaching out to older students from our community that volunteer their time with our Homework Helper club, is "fun and rewarding," says volunteer student Shanita Ray.  Shanita, who by the way is Ms. Nichols daughter, agrees that volunteering her time not only benefits the young students, but her as well.  She even spoke to some of her senior classmates about taking part in our November Special Education PTA (SEPTA) Homework Helper club!

This was purely volunteer work (no compensation given).  We want to teach our children about the importance of volunteering, and of giving something back to the community from whence they evolved. At year's end, all student volunteers as well as parent volunteers will be recognized at our Parent Appreciation night in June.
