The FLES Program (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools)
The FLES Program is expanding…
Our students are learning Spanish. We started our FLES Program in the 2010-2011 school year with our kindergarten and first grade students. This year, we’ve expanded to offer our language program to second graders across the district.
We invite you to read this year’s first FLES Newsletter, and encourage you to learn some Spanish along with our students. It is our plan to add another language to our program in the future.

Dear Colleagues,
Great News!!!! Fordham University has been awarded a 4 ½ year grant to prepare instructional teacher leaders through the LI/Westchester Bilingual Teacher Leadership Academy (BETLA) to become effective instructional leaders, staff developers and mentors. The programs primary goal is to foster strong leadership skills in outstanding teachers, who will then be committed to work and support fellow teachers who are presently serving English Language Learners.
Funding for the LI/Westchester Bilingual Teacher Leadership Academy (BETLA) has been provided by the New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies (NYSED/OBE-FLS). We are recruiting 15 ESL/Bilingual teachers from Long Island and 15 ESL/Bilingual teachers from Westchester County. Participants will receive full tuition support for 15 graduate credits, support for classroom instructional materials, as well as an intensive Summer Leadership Institute. LI/Westchester Bilingual Teacher Leadership Academy (BETLA) participants will be assigned to a mentor for ongoing support. In addition, Fordham University, Center for Educational Partnerships will provide year round professional Development.
