Athletic Department Honors Pioneer
On Friday, January 20, 2012, the Athletic Department gathered in front of a spirited home crowd for the re-dedication of the Ollie Mills Gymnasium at Hempstead High School. The gymnasium has been newly renovated and it was only fitting that it be re-dedicated in honor of an educational pioneer. Mr. Ollie Mills was the first person of color to teach in the Hempstead Public Schools. Mr. Mills is also the only coach in New York State public high school history to win NY State championships in both boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball. In attendance was Mr. Doug Mills representing the Mills family. The department also took the opportunity to honor Mr. John Pitts and Ms. Lisa Smith for their contributions to the Hempstead Tiger Athletics program.
