Superintendent's Spring Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, Residents and Colleagues:

May is officially here, which means that the end of the 2011-2012 school year is upon us. As we reflect on what we have accomplished so far this school year, I believe it is imperative to recognize that our school district is moving in a positive and upward direction.

Just to mention a few achievements: Our high school students completed a college course for college credit in the New York State Smart Scholars Program at Farmingdale State College; our high school also saw an increase to 70 percent in the number of students earning a Regents diploma; our middle school students are completing pre-advanced placement courses; our district expanded its Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (FLES) Program; our high school increased enrollment in its Mandarin Chinese course; our district implemented four new iMac computer labs at the high school; our district hosted a Parent Athlete Orientation Night each sports season for parents and students; and our student-artists were featured in the Eighth Annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition at Adelphi University.

In addition, our district is forging ahead with the restoration of the historical Prospect School on Peninsula Boulevard. In January, the Board of Education appointed Elite Construction of New York as the construction management firm for the project. Our school district is very pleased that the $18.1 million bond project is moving along according to the projected schedule, and we look forward to seeing the landmark school building open its doors for our kindergartners in September 2013.

This school year, however, has also been a very challenging one, especially since our district had to plan for the next academic and fiscal year in the midst of very stringent economic conditions. I want to take this opportunity to reassure each of you that although we face many challenges as a school district, this Administration is working assiduously to push our school district towards excellence. Our district is steadily progressing and this Administration thanks each of you for your continued support.

I look forward to continuing our partnership in improving education for our students during the remaining months of the 2011-2012 school year and beyond. With an ongoing, innovative and positive collaboration, I truly believe that yes, we can provide “A Better Future for Every Child” in our school district.

Sincerely,

Dr. Patricia Garcia

Students Learn Life Lessons from Former Tigers

Former NFL players and Hempstead High School alumni Reggie Terry and Tim Terry share words of wisdom with Senior Academy students

March 29, 2012 was undoubtedly a Thursday to remember for a group of Hempstead High School students.

As part of a special assembly, 30 Senior Academy students were able to hear important words of wisdom from former National Football League players and Hempstead High School alumni Reggie Terry and Tim Terry. The former Hempstead Tigers, who are brothers, gave a motivational speech to the teens to encourage them to work diligently at bringing their life goals to fruition.

Tim, a former linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks, discussed the importance of being a successful student-athlete with the high schoolers, because both academics and athletics, he explained, can help them to accomplish great feats in their lives. The Hempstead High School Class of 1992 graduate is now the Assistant Director of Pro Personnel for the Green Bay Packers.

Reggie, a former linebacker for the St. Louis Rams, reminded the students that the road to making their dreams come true will not be an easy one, but with hard work and perseverance, they can become successful and productive young leaders. The Hempstead High School Class of 1989 graduate also urged the students to take pride in being a member of the Hempstead community, and to dedicate time to listen to their parents, teachers, coaches and other adults in their lives who have inspirational messages to share. Reggie is now the Football Administration Director for the Arizona Cardinals.

Hempstead Board of Education President Charles Renfroe and former Hempstead High School teacher and coach Alan Hodish also shared greetings during the assembly. In addition, television news coverage from this Hempstead Tiger event was featured on Verizon FiOS1 News later that evening.

Math and Science Academy Students Raise Trout

Students learn about fish and more as participants in an Ichthyology Research Program

Under the leadership of science teacher Mrs. Leibu, students in the Hempstead High School Campus’s College Preparatory Academy for Math and Science are now dedicating their time after school to learn how to raise trout.

As part of their participation in the academy’s Ichthyology Research Program, the students feed the fish daily, check the pH and ammonia levels inside the fish tank, clean the fish tank and more to help the trout eggs hatch and grow into adult fish. The program — which has enabled the students to study the growing stages of Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout, the trout rate of survival, as well as learn how to test the different pH and ammonia levels in a fish environment — is also part of the academy’s partnership with the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium.

With assistance from Principal Dagoberto Artiles and teacher Mrs. Leibu, the academy students discussed their research and findings in the program with Hempstead community members during the Hempstead Board of Education’s monthly meeting in March.

Campus teens help to bring smiles to youngsters' faces during Children's Day Celebration

As participants in the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club’s Children’s
Day Celebration, Hempstead High School Campus students transformed two Fulton
Elementary School classrooms into an activity fun zone for kids in March.

Led by College Preparatory Academy for Music and Art guidance
counselor Jessica Sabia, 10 high school students volunteered their time after
school that day to host arts and crafts activities, exercises, snack time, and
more for the young faces of the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club. While spending
time with the children, the high schoolers were also able to teach them about
the importance of, among other things, learning, teamwork, listening to others,
creativity and respect for diversity.

The event, which gave the high school students the
opportunity to inspire the younger generation to be productive citizens, was
also a part of the high school’s ongoing efforts to encourage students to do
all that they can to give back to the Hempstead community.

Students Mark the 100th Day of School

Schools host activities for students in honor of milestone date in the 2011-2012 school year

Counting, dancing, jumping and running are just a few words that describe the unique ways students in the district celebrated the 100th day of school in February.

At the Jackson Main School, Principal Dr. Rodney Gilmore and teachers in each grade led activities that highlighted 100. In the third grade, students painted a mural of 100 hands to honor the special day. The mural helped the students to learn about the importance of teamwork, friendship and respect for diversity. Jackson Main School fourth-graders created a 100-year time capsule — which included descriptive essays written by the students about the year 2112 — and buried it in the school’s garden. The fourth-graders and their teachers then capped off the celebration with a 100-Piece Trail Mix Party.

The school’s fifth-graders exercised their muscles in recognition of the special day during a Let’s Move Celebration. With smiles on their faces, the Hempstead students completed different 100-themed physical fitness activities including 100 seconds to make 100 as a grade, and 10 sets of 10 exercises.

And the celebration did not stop there.

At the Early Childhood Center (ECC), Principal Richard Brown and ECC teachers transformed the school’s cafetorium into a 100th Day of School Activity Zone. While some kindergartners jumped in and out of 10 hula-hoops lined on the floor, others participated in arts and crafts, counting exercises and dance sessions that highlighted 100. The students then ended the celebration with a pizza party.

District Celebrates Read Across America Day

Students learn about the importance of reading while honoring the birthday of Dr. Seuss

Students in the district kicked-off the month of March by showing their excitement for reading as participants in their school’s National Read Across America Day Celebration. The National Education Association created the initiative in March 1998 as a way to celebrate the importance of reading, as well as to pay tribute to the birthday of legendary children’s author Dr. Seuss.

And on March 1 and 2, district students did just that.

At the Franklin, Hempstead Pre-K and Jackson Annex schools, elected officials, physicians, retired and present district administrators and teachers, and more visited classrooms throughout the day to read Dr. Seuss books with students.

At the Early Childhood Center (ECC), kindergarteners participated in activities that highlighted the importance of reading, writing, counting and sequencing. This year’s theme was “A Fish Out of Water,” which was selected in honor of the children’s book by Helen Palmer Geisel. The book, which tells the story of Otto the Fish and his caretaker, is also part of the Dr. Seuss Beginner Books Collection. At the conclusion of the event, each class was given a fish bowl with fresh water and a goldfish in it as a special Dr. Seuss birthday party favor. Television news coverage from this wonderful celebration was featured on WLNY TV 10/55 on March 2.

The Hempstead Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia commend the building principals, teachers and staff in the district for continuing unique efforts to emphasize the importance of literacy to students.

Superintendent's Winter Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, Residents and Colleagues:

The second half of our school year is already in full swing and I want to thank each of you for working with our school district to make many positive strides during the first half of the 2011-2012 school year.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Winter 2012 edition of our district’s Hempstead Herald newsletter is now available for viewing in print and on our district’s website. As you peruse through this latest newsletter, please take the time to read about all of the great student achievements in our district. Our students are excelling academically, athletically, and musically, as well as volunteering their time to make a difference locally and globally. Our school district is very proud of them and all that they have accomplished so far this school year. I would like to take this opportunity to commend all of our bright, talented and hard working students for a job well done.

As your Superintendent of Schools, I also want to reassure you that the administrators, teachers and staff in our district will remain steadfast in continuing efforts to improve and strengthen our students’ academic performance and talents. Achieving this goal will not be easy, but with a complete united front, I truly believe that this goal — and many others — is attainable in the Hempstead Public Schools.

Lastly, as you all know, the 2012-2013 budget planning season is now upon us and the district is slated to host several important budget workshops and meetings in March. Preparing next year’s budget will be an extremely challenging task for our school district because we are in the midst of very tough economic times. Therefore, the Hempstead Board of Education and I strongly encourage you to attend the important meetings listed below to ensure that you remain informed about the future of our school district.

Please also note that Tuesday, May 15, 2012 is the district’s annual Budget Vote, and polls will be open at the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School, 70 Greenwich Street Hempstead, NY 11550, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. This administration urges you to please save the date and remember to cast your ballot on that important day.

Campus Students are Smart Scholars

Hempstead High School Campus students earn college credit as participants in the New York State Smart Scholars Program

Twenty-six Hempstead High School Campus students can now add Farmingdale State College student to their list of academic accolades.

Since October 2011, these students have completed college course work for college credit at Farmingdale’s campus as participants in the New York State Smart Scholars Program. The initiative provides high school students with the opportunity to take college courses and earn a minimum of 20 college credits while they are still in high school. The program, which pays for the students’ tuition, books and transportation, is funded by a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant.

The high schoolers attended the program every Saturday morning for three hours to complete the college’s Freshman Experience (FRX 101) course. The class, which culminated with an award ceremony on January 28, 2012 to honor the students for completing their first Smart Scholars semester, taught the campus freshmen, sophomores and juniors how to become more efficient students. The Hempstead School District is currently one of only three Farmingdale State College Smart Scholars partners on Long Island.

The Hempstead Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia commend these Hempstead scholars for valuing the importance of academic excellence and pursuing higher education.

Superintendent's Message

Dear Parents, Guardians, Residents and Colleagues:

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year. The start of a new school year always brings a renewed sense of commitment to education to every member of the Hempstead school community. The Hempstead Board of Education, Central Administration, teachers and staff are ready to work diligently at making this new school year another academically challenging and productive year for our students.

I would like to take this opportunity to announce some of the changes in our staff for the 2011-2012 school year. Dr. Johnetta Hill is the new interim principal of the Hempstead High School Campus’ Senior College Preparatory Academy and Mr. Henry Williams will now serve as the principal of the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School.

This is also an opportune time to highlight the progress that our district made during the summer months. Many of our ELA, math, science and social studies teachers dedicated their time this summer to improving education for our students through curriculum writing. This work will assist tremendously in our efforts to align our curriculum with the new core standards.

In between cleaning and maintaining our school buildings this summer, our Facilities Department also completed the replacement of the Hempstead High School Campus’ gym floor, as well as commenced site work to remedy flooding around the campus. All of the academic and building enhancements that were made this summer were truly a success, and I am confident that these accomplishments will assist in our pursuit of educational excellence in the Hempstead Public Schools.

As we begin the 2011-2012 school year, I believe it is imperative for us to remember that this year will bring many new challenges as we strive as a school district to provide “A Better Future for Every Child in Hempstead.” However, we must continue to remain steadfast in working as a unit to move our school district onward and upward. You have my sincerest commitment that this Administration will work tirelessly to ensure that the Hempstead Public Schools properly educates and nurtures the talents of every student.

I look forward to working with each of you to make the 2011-2012 school year a very successful one for our students.

Sincerely,

Dr. Patricia Garcia
Superintendent of Schools

Estimados Padres, Apoderados, Residentes y Colegas:

Atentamente,

Dra. Patricia García

Prospect School Bond Project Passes

On Tuesday, March 15, 2011, residents of the Hempstead Union Free School District approved the district’s proposed $18,135,084 Prospect School Bond Project, which is slated to renovate and reopen Prospect School on Peninsula Boulevard as a districtwide Kindergarten Center at no additional cost to taxpayers. The final vote tally was: 780 Yes, 153 No.
The total cost of the project will be completely funded through New York State Building Aid, EXCEL Aid (which is a one-time grant from the State), and $500,000 the district already has allocated for this project, and it will not increase property taxes for district homeowners.
The proposal will completely renovate and restore this district property, and provide the district’s children with a state-of-the-art Kindergarten Center designed to specifically to meet their instructional, emotional and social needs.
The district is currently paying approximately $569,000 annually to lease the current Early Childhood Center kindergarten school building and the Hagedorn pre-kindergarten school building. The Prospect Project will enable the district to end both leases, resulting in a considerable annual savings to the district. To date, the district has spent approximately $5.9 million to rent both buildings.
Thank You Hempstead School District Voters!

Jackson Main Earns National Title I School Distinction

Jackson Main Elementary School can now add Title I School to its list of accolades since it was recently selected as a 2010 National Title I Distinguished School by the National Title I Association. The distinction, which includes a $10,000 educational award, was presented to Jackson Main for its progress in promoting higher achievement among students and closing the achievement gap between student groups.

The district congratulates Principal Dr. Rodney Gilmore, Hempstead Pre-K School Principal Frances Edmonds, who served as the school’s Interim Principal while Dr. Gilmore served as the district’s Interim Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education and the teachers, teaching assistants, staff, parents and students at Jackson Main for earning this distinction.

“Earning this distinction is truly a great honor. The Jackson Main School teachers are dedicated, extremely hard working, data-driven and collaborative. A vast majority of them continuously participate in staff development opportunities to improve their instruction, and collegial conversations about best practices, effective strategies, and discuss student needs regularly.

In addition, the implementation of job-embedded and on-going professional development in these areas provided the staff with the ability to bring those elements together to achieve remarkable gains in closing the achievement gap, particularly in the Limited English Proficient (LEP) and Students with Disabilities (SWP) sub-groups. They meet in grade levels weekly with the principal to analyze and discuss student achievement data, set goals, and plan effective, engaging instruction.

In closing, we are united in our focus on continuous improvement to prepare our students for the future. Our success comes from a team effort; teachers, parents and community working cohesively to ensure that our students receive a quality education. We commend and celebrate our success, but ‘Good is Not Our Goal, We Strive for Excellence.’”

-Dr. Rodney Gilmore
