Students Pay Tribute to Dr. King
In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 16, students in the district paid tribute to his life, work and legacy.
At Hempstead Pre-K School, students performed songs and poems that highlighted the importance of respect, compassion, love and other values that Dr. King supported as a civil rights activist during an assembly on January 13. Principal Frances Edmonds, the students and staff then concluded the program by singing Stevie Wonder's rendition of "Happy Birthday" in honor of Dr. King's birthday.
At Marshall School, students honored Dr. King during a special event each day starting on January 9. The school's recognition featured an Acts of Kindness Day, MLK Peace March, a MLK Statue Unveiling and more. On January 11, the kindergartners also hit the stage during a Honoring the Dream assembly to perform songs, poems and skits about Dr. King and his efforts to achieve racial equality. The weeklong tribute culminated on January 13 with a Dr. King Birthday Celebration.
Complete coverage of the district's recognition of Dr. King will be featured in the 2012 spring edition of the district's Hempstead Herald newsletter.
